All about Consciousness Hacking

Consciousness Hacking started in December 2013 with the intention of sparking a community of makers who are focused on exploring and building new technologies for human flourishing.

Our community shares the vision of a technological landscape in service to humanity, not the other way around. We are exploring the relationship between humans and technology because we know it is a defining question for our future. Technology is only becoming more ubiquitous, and we believe that we must take an active approach to shaping its development.

In a short time, we’ve grown organically from a few locations, to over 20 communities and 10,000 members worldwide. We are united by two principles:
First, our mission is to see maximum human flourishing on a global scale, using the best tools from every approach — technological or not.
Second, we believe that modern technology, driven by science, has an incredible (and largely unrealized) potential to support psychological, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

Wellbeing has many manifestations, including reduced stress and anxiety, positive emotion, and constructive actions. But there is an incredible depth to wellbeing which is not widely acknowledged or pursued.

Research into meditation happening around the globe is showing us that the brains of advanced meditators look vastly different from the average person. But that’s not all. These meditators also feel vastly different. Their ongoing experience of life points us toward a profound human capacity for peace, compassion, and human connection. This is not a religious or spiritual experience. It is a human experience. And the mission of Consciousness Hacking is to democratize the deepest and most important aspects of our human experience, making them universally accessible across cultural, religious, and geographical boundaries.

Today there are as many mobile phone subscriptions as their are humans. Even the poorest countries have over 80% access to mobile phones. And most of this growth has occurred over the last 15 years. Technology has the capacity to be produced rapidly at large scales and distributed globally regardless of age, belief, or location. Currently, these tools provide access to information, communication, and medical support. But there is no reason why we can’t design devices to help us get in touch with the most meaningful and beneficial aspects of our human experience.

This isn’t just about individuals feeling better. The UNESCO constitution states: “since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed.” In other words, we can change the world from the inside out. What kind of world would we create if we built it not from fear, greed, and violence, but from unconditional love, compassion, connection, and peace?

Fulfilling this potential is the mission of Consciousness Hacking. We seek to accomplish this by nurturing a global community focused on exploring, designing, and using technologies which facilitate individual and collective awakening.

It’s a meta approach. Our community can spark 1000 new transformative technologies which can in turn improve life for millions of people. We can explore different visions of the future, and their implications. And we can come to model a healthy relationship between humans and technology. We do all of this in service of human thriving and harmony with each other, our planet, and beyond. So please, join us!
